The fall has arrived! Over the next few weeks, we’ll see those autumn colors showing up, leaves falling, and the temperatures will begin to drop. The Ozarks is a beautiful place to live, especially in the fall. Another bonus to being outside this time of year is that many bugs will be slowing down and around less and less. This is the time of year for sweaters, hot cocoa, and pie! This is a great time of year to put on your favorite fall-colored sweater, dress your family to complement, and get outside for a photoshoot!
Often I photograph my clients in my home studio, but outdoor photoshoots do have some advantages. It’s nice to have the space to move around in, especially with small children and pets! Little ones can get overstimulated in some environments, but outdoors can be pretty relaxing. Being outdoors also makes your session feel more like an outing.
There are some limitations to having your family session out in nature; one of which would be your timing. Since we can’t change the sun, we must change our time of day to have optimal lighting. We want to be using nature when the natural light is the most beautiful, that time is just after sunrise and just before sunset. That is something to keep in mind, I photograph all of my outdoor sessions from 5-7 pm. The second part is the weather. We can’t control what mother nature is going to do, so we need to be ready to reschedule for sudden rain or soon, temperature drops. I took a family portrait in -8 degree temperatures; it was painful and we all looked blue and stiff!
What you wear will be different from an outdoor session. In the studio, my clients are often barefoot. Outdoors you want to dress for the temperatures and you need appropriate footwear. If there is much walking or the location is pretty rough, I often have my clients bring a backup pair of shoes. If you have pretty shoes that you want to wear in your picture, but we have to walk through tall grass to get to the perfect spot, it’s nice to be able to wear shoes to protect your feet and carry your shoes for the picture.
Where ever you have your family pictures taken, just make sure you get them! You never know what tomorrow is going to bring and I’ve never heard anyone say that they have taken too many pictures of the people that they love. It’s great to take snapshots around the home, but it’s not every day that you take this time to just BE. Just be with your family in these moments, and just BE in the same photograph! This is your legacy, this is what you have built and cherish. Every family is unique, celebrate it.
This is the perfect time to celebrate with your family. Before the cold Missouri winter sets in, let’s schedule an outdoor family portrait session. I’m offering a FREE GIFT of a set of Holiday Cards, for all family sessions booked in October 2020. This gift will be yours with your purchase of your favorite family image/s. That way you can share the love with your close friends and extended family. Over the last few months, I think we have missed seeing friends and family. Fill out the form below to find out how you can take advantage of this opportunity.
